Grassroots Movement
The role of “grassroots” movements in the development of Chinese football is largely underestimated in the public debate. Rather than exclusively analyse the statements of national authorities, experts and international observers, the blog will give voice to the football grassroots in mainland China. It aims at changing the perspective in order to ascertain what assessment Chinese football supporters make of the announced reforms and developments of Chinese football. Special emphasis is laid on nationalism and consolidation of national identity, as well as issues of football governance in China. It is argued that the perceptions and actions of Chinese football supporters are crucial for the accomplishment of political reform measures to develop national football. A comprehensive development of Chinese football cannot be performed without the voluntary decision of the football community in China to participate in football-related activities.
